Volunteer Spotlight - Susan Hughes

Today we shine the spotlight on Susan Hughes!

Susan has been a volunteer with MarineParents since March 2018. She holds the following positions with MarineParents.

Group Guide Region 6 South East
Group Guide Alpha Company Parris Island
Group Guide Papa Company Parris Island
Community Relations Presenter North Carolina

We asked Susan to share her personal experience as a volunteer:

Why did you decide to volunteer with MarineParents?

"Giving of my time has always been second nature to me and I really just wanted to pay it forward; thanks to the support I received as a New-to-Boot parent from Nov 2017-Feb 2018."

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering with MarineParents?

"As a volunteer with RTBN: Having been in their shoes not once but twice, the ability to in essence hold members' hands as they walk the journey from recruit to Marine. Especially when it seems someone is having a bad day and really his/her recruit, just knowing that I was able to hopefully be a little bit of sunshine in what may seem like a really dark day - I couldn't ask for anything else.

"As a volunteer with Regions: different platform therefore different purpose. It has been extremely rewarding to see how States have evolved to Regions and how Regions has grown to become a wonderful place for members to connect with each other, while volunteer's are responsible for sharing relatable information to the organization's purpose."

What would you say to someone who is interested in volunteering?

"Just give it a go and if you find it doesn't work for you at the moment, that's ok. I think the biggest misconception is that volunteers have to work in just one area (i.e. RTBN) but there is so much more. If you're concerned about time being an issue, the requirement is only 1 hour a day!! We have a lot of volunteers who work full time and volunteer with us - so it is possible to do both!! If you like working as part of a team, this organization is for you!! Just do it!! You won't regret it."

With 1485 volunteer hours since March 2018, we thank Susan for her time and dedication to the members of our MarineParents groups! OOH-RAH!! MarineParents could not do what we do without our amazing volunteers!
