Group Leader Kilo Company (San Diego)
Marine Parent and Volunteer
Recruit Parents Facebook Groups Volunteer,
Total Volunteer Hours 1st & 2nd Quarter of 2018: 366.43! Joan volunteers as a Group Leader for Kilo Company, MCRD San Diego, where she works with her fellow Kilo Volunteers to acclimate, educate, and support the family members of the new Kilo recruits as they take the roller coaster ride that is boot camp. While some families have a long tradition of military service, many are novices and find themselves nervous of their future as Marine Corps parents. We are there to walk them, day by day through the experience.
Joan is a retired junior high school librarian. She lives in Princeton, Texas, near Dallas, with Tom, her husband of 46 years. Joan is a the proud Marine grandmother of Karter, who graduated MCRD--San Diego in early 2016. She served as a Fox Company, Platoon Parent during his cycle.
Joan volunteers with Marine Parents to help families rise above that "lost" feeling many experience after their recruit leaves for boot camp. She hopes to help them understand and appreciate what their recruits face each day. She would like to be there to help them through any rough times, because, as she says, "We are a family and must care for our newest members." Joan hopes to repay those who walked with her though boot camp by helping others not only survive, but enjoy this experience.
