Happy Independence Day! Today, Saturday, July 4, 2020, Americans everwhere will celebrate the 244th anniversary of our nation declaring its independence from England. Since day one, the United States Marine Corps has been on hand to protect the freedoms and way of life we, as Americans, hold so dear.
Early Fourth of July festivities included concerts, bonfires, parades, and the firing of cannons and muskets. It didn't take long for the tradition of lighting fireworks on the Fourth of July. On July 4, 1777, in Philadephia, PA, the fireworks tradition began. The celebration concluded with ships firing 13 canons in honor of the 13 colonies.
The Fourth of July celebration became even more of a patriotic celebration after the War of 1812, which again saw the United States against Great Britain. In 1870, the Fourth of July became a federal holiday, and in 1941 it was expanded to be a paid holiday for all federal employees.
Today, the Fourth of July has become a time for leisure activities, family get-togethers, and barbecues. However, we must never forget the incredible sacrifices our Marines and other service members made to give us the freedoms we have today.
We hope that everyone in the Marine Parents community has a happy and safe holiday. Thank you to all of our readers and supporters, and thank you, Marines, for keeping this the Land of the Free!
Thank you for supporting our troops and veterans by supporting the outreach programs of MarineParents.com.
