August 26, 2009
Dear Marine Families,

If this is the first edition of the MarineParents.com Newsletter you have received, WELCOME! If you are a returning reader we are glad you have joined us.

This is the sixth year I've written in Marine Parents that "fall is back to school time" alluding to the unique challenges Marine families face with multiple deployments. As much as things stay the same each year, kids going back to school with the brand new boxes of crayons and our troops continuing to be engaged in combat zones, there are changes as well and things to look forward to. Sometimes we have to switch over to the bright side of the crayon box and look for the positive no matter what the challenges are.

After four years in the Marine Corps, three combat tours and an Okinawa tour, my son is now a sophomore in College with the world in front of him. That is something to celebrate! He's not the typical sophomore going back to school this fall at 26 years old. Those who are perceptive can see in his eyes that he's had a lifetime of experience in the four years he served his country and he has a myriad of Marine Corps experiences to help him succeed.

Our newsletter this week is a celebration of the positive things going on in our lives, and in our Marines' lives. We've added a new column "Attention on Deck: The Voice of Our Marines" with a great piece this week written from a Marine to a first grade class. We've got a USMC story about classes sending letters to our Marines overseas. And we've just sent 1000 care packages to Marines overseas after reaching our goal on the dollar campaign of $20,000!

I'd like to ask that you read through the newsletter and share in our celebrations this week. Be sure to take a look at a new opportunity we're bringing to you called "Your Cause, Your Card" to help benefit Marine Parents and our many outreach programs. Thank you for taking time to connect and share!

The Care Package Project™ Goal Met!

Thanks to YOUR support, 1,000 care packages were sent to Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan on August 15th!

Marines with care packages from Marine Parents

We launched the Dollar Campaign to raise money for The Care Package Project™ in May and we set the largest goal ever set for this program: $20,000.

By August 15th, Marine families and supporters from across the nation collectively donated $20,026.92!

Sending care packages to Marines in combat zones involves considerable costs for both content and shipping. The astonishing number of Marines touched by this program is a direct result of your support and generosity.

On behalf of numerous men and women defending our freedom overseas, thank YOU for making The Care Package Project™ possible!

4th Annual Jerabek Memorial Challenge

Team Marine Parents at 4th Annual Jerabek Memorial ChallengeOn Saturday August 9th, 2009, Team Marine Parents™ participated in the 4th Annual Jerabek Memorial Challenge in Hobart, Wisconsin.

The rainy weather could not dampen spirits nor keep the participants away. The dedicated members of this Team collectively raised nearly $4,500 for Marine Parents outreach programs, including The Care Package Project™, Purple Heart Hero Support™, and Operation PAL™.

The Wisconsin Gold Star families in attendance were given gold star shaped helium balloons to release if they chose to.

This year was extremely special as members of Ryan's unit, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, were reunited. The family requested a 2/4 flag for this special occasion.

In response, the Marine Corps went above and beyond the request of Ryan's family.

First Graders "Ask a Marine" Part I
Attention on Deck: The Voice of Our Marines

First Graders "Ask a Marine"Some correspondence was exchanged between a Marine in Afghanistan and his close friend's First Grade class.

See what the children had to "Ask a Marine" below:

Hello my name is Emily. I want to ask you a question. Dear Corporal, you are a good man. And I like you. Do you have only soldier clothes? From Emily.

Marine responds - Emily, I did only pack soldier clothes; I only have a small amount of space to pack all of my gear, so I could not fit any "civilian clothes." Being able to dress in favorite clothes is one thing that I miss very much about being back in America. P.S. I think you are a fantastic young lady!

My name is Ryan. What year did South go away from North?

For more questions from First Graders and this Marine's responses, watch for September's Attention on Deck: The Voice of Our Marines column. We'll bring you First Graders "Ask a Marine": Part II!
Marine Mom Writes Son's Story
"My Miracle Marine" by Connie McClellan

My Miracle Marine by Connie McClellan"Marine Shot Twice, Same Week, Same Arm, Answers to... Lucky."

That was the title of an article written about Marine John McClellan before he was shot a THIRD time. The three-time Purple Heart recipient sustained an enemy sniper shot through his head.

John's mother, Connie, chronicles this story with a day-by-day account of her son's astonishing recovery. It is an inspirational story of what the power of love, faith and family can do to bring about a miraculous healing.

We have extraordinary copies of this book available; they are signed by author Connie McClellan AND the Miracle Marine John McClellan!

Students Show Patriotism
On 521-foot Scroll Sent to Marines

Students send patriotic messages to MarinesSome people will walk up to Marines in public and shake their hands to say 'thank you' for their service.

Others take it a few steps further by saying their thanks on hundreds of feet of paper.

George and Shirley Jackson have been mailing scrolls of thanks to deployed troops for nearly 15 years. Most recently, they sent a 521-foot scroll of patriotic messages of thanks to Marines in Afghanistan. Messages like "Thank you for your service," or "You rock and watch out for missiles," cover just about every inch. The scroll was posted on the walls in Dining Facility 2.

"Just saying thanks isn't enough for them," said one Staff Sergeant. "We as leaders can tell our guys thanks, but seeing it from people back home has great meaning for the Marines."

George said in an email, he does this as a way to thank troops for what they do for their country day in and day out.

MarineParents.com, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity. MarineParents.com, Inc. was founded in January, 2003 in response to parents' needs to find information and to have a Place to Connect & Share™ with one another during deployments. Our free online services and connections have expanded to support and educate Marine moms & dads, spouses, families and friends and we'll be offering our 6th Conference in New Orleans in April, 2010. We've helped over 40,000 Marine and recruit families during bootcamp, training, active duty and deployments. We've shipped thousands of care packages overseas to our Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan, sent thousands of prayers and letters to injured Marines and served hundreds of lunches to families caring for their Marines at Bethesda Hospital. You've found a Place to Connect & Share™.
